Like most
booklovers, I have, very reluctantly, to make some space on
my bookshelves from time to time. The books below are ones I
have rebound or repaired and which didn't make the cut in the
last cull! They are for sale, to good homes, should anyone be
interested in buying them.
Thanks
to Royal Mail's new pricing system, it's a struggle to work
out some of the postage costs without physically taking the
package along to my local Post Office, so the prices shown are
my best guess and are subject to confirmation.

The
Adventures of King Pausole by Pierre Louys One of a Limited
Edition on Hand-Made Paper Published by The Fortune Press A
plate inside the book is inscribed:
"This
edition is limited to 75 copies on Kelmscott hand-made paper
numbered 1-75; and 1125 copies on batchelor hand-made paper,
numbered 76-1200 of which this is number 90."
The
book was published in 1929 and is a classic example of the erotic
literature of the day. (It wouldn't even raise an eyebrow now!)
It has 312 pages. The pages have been trimmed at the top of
the book, but not elsewhere. Dimensions are: 10" by just over
6½". Some of the chapter headings are as follows:
The inside of the book is tight, very clean and unmarked, apart
from a few light stains on the front and rear pastedowns. There
is also a little yellowing of the first page, which is blank
and the title page. Even the edges of the pages are relatively
clean considering the age. There is a name written inside the
book in ink with 1930 written underneath and a squiggle, also
in ink, further down the page. It looks as though someone has
tried to remove the name at some point but it is still visible
and looks like P C (or G) Howard or Haywood. Outside, and clearly
visible on the first picture, there are two patches at the top
and bottom of the spine which have faded. There has been considerable
wear to the marbled paper over the years, especially at the
corners and edges. The paper has been carefully lifted, repaired
and pasted onto new boards and the repairs are not obtrusive,
although they are visible. There are no illustrations and no
mention anywhere to suggest there should have been any. This
is still a very nice book, especially considering its age, and
worth adding to a collection for the beautiful hand-made paper
alone. It is a heavy item and weighs well over 1kg.

According
to the blurb inside, this is a "Revised Edition in 1953
for the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. First
published in 1937 for the Coronation of Their Majesties King
George VI and Queen Elizabeth." This particular copy has
an extra page tipped in immediately before the title page, with
a printed message from the Mayor of West Hartlepool and a note
saying that it was presented to Joan H Culley. The spine has
been renewed, but the endpapers, which are very attractive have
been preserved. It is a very clean copy inside, although there
are a few places on both front and back covers where the surface
of the paper has worn and the white paper below is visible.
There are 2 coloured plates as well as black and white ones.

This
is a small copy of "Buffon's Natural History", published
in 1832 by J Smith of 193, High Holborn. Unfortunately the index
finishes at "Tortoise", so the final few pages are
missing, but other than that it is complete. It is a small book
measuring just 13cm by 7.5cm (5.25" by 3") and has
been rebound in quarter leather and cloth, with a matching slipcase.
The endpapers are handmarbled. It has 534 pages plus pages i
to xii of the index. The title page is grubby, but the rest
of the book is clean, with only a very little foxing.

Published
in 1903 by Cassell and Co., this is a nice clean copy with a
lovely coloured frontispiece. The spine has been renewed. The
cloth is a richer crimson than the picture suggests, but try
as I will, I can't adjust the picture to reflect this. The title
page says there are over 100 illustrations and I'm taking the
publisher's word for it!

A two volume set of "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon,
Gent", by Washington Irving. This edition was published
by John Murray in 1821 and is the fifth edition. Both volumes
have been rebound in matching half leather and hand marbled
paper. Both volumes are nice and clean, with only the odd spot
of foxing.

"The
Pioneers", by J. Fenimore Cooper, printed for T Allman
and C Daly. It is not dated, but appears to be circa 1840/50.
It has been half bound in green leather with machine assisted
marbled paper. The title page is rather grubby, but the rest
of the book is nice and clean. The pages are untrimmed.

A
nursing diary by Burroughs Wellcome & Co for 1913-14. The
spine has been renewed and the original pasted over the repair,
making the repair less obtrusive. The corners are a little bumped
as the scan shows and the endpapers, which are the originals
have blackened parts at the bottom both front and back. The
book originally belonged to Nurse A Forbes of Erdington, Birmingham
and there are just one or two entries at the beginning of February.
At the beginning is a section on "Nursing in Wartime"
which was rather prophetic given the date of the book.
