PDSA vets revealed that the number of pets treated for the effects of accidental poisoning is rising sharply.
Since 2002 there has been a 73-per-cent increase in the number of cases where PDSA vets have had to refer to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) – a national resource providing information to vets about poisons and the associated treatment.

PDSA has devised a simple computer-based formula, ‘Your Right Pet’, to ensure the health and happiness of pets.
The four-step ‘PETS’ formula, launches online on Monday 12 January. This helps every prospective pet owner carefully consider the main issues before taking on any domestic animal, from rats to retrievers.
Sean Wensley, Senior Veterinary Surgeon at PDSA, says: “With this new online tool, you can find out quickly and easily which type of pet will suit you best.”
The four-part formula, PETS, is based on the key elements of Place, Exercise, Time and Spend. All need to be considered to ensure owners and their pets are well matched.

PDSA provides free veterinary treatment for the sick and injured pets of owners who receive help with their housing costs - either Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit.
There are currently in the region of 5.8 million households in Britain that fulfil these eligibility criteria. At the start of 2004, just over 4 million of them(70%) are served either by a PetAid hospital or by a PDSA PetAid practice.
